Would a 295 GPH powerhead work for my Skimmer in my 33 gallon tank?

Can I use this power head on my protein skimmer or would it be too powerful and make the skimmer not work properly? Should I go with a less powerful power head to siphon the water into the skimmer? It's a hang on back type. I'm new to saltwater, this is my first saltwater aquarium. I have years and years of experience in freshwater though. I plugged in the skimmer and when I woke up the "gunk" was clear, so I changed the air stone to make the bubbles a lot smaller and I'm using a power head that isn't as powerful... it's a petcetera 85-PH power head.
